That's great. There is very little romance in this story. Yes, Dan gets a girl in the end, but it is mostly the story of right over wrong. That bunch of people sticking together like family and in the end things working out in their favor. It's not fair to review a book like this on merit or quality of writing.

When you pick up a Louis L'Amour book you know exactly what you're going to get. You can pretty much guess what the plot will be. You know there will be gunfights where the good guys are badly outnumbered by the bad guys, and yet you know that they will be victorious. But for some people, that is exactly what they want to read. I've never read him before today. I never wanted to read his books before today.

But I love my husband very much, and because he asked me to read this one I gave it a shot. It is exactly what I expected. Nothing more. Nothing less. Do I love Louis L'Amour? But I still love my husband. Jul 19, Rod rated it really liked it. Although I've not seen it mentioned, this book strikes me as one that Louis had started but maybe did not finish and was not completed until sometime after his passing. I've been reading all of his books in the order they were written, not published.

Started with Westward the Tide a few months ago. This story just seemed to jump from one location to the next without typical LL direction and in much more short description than I am accustomed to from his books. I looked down to see how many pages Although I've not seen it mentioned, this book strikes me as one that Louis had started but maybe did not finish and was not completed until sometime after his passing. I looked down to see how many pages were left and was surprised the story would end in five more pages.

It's still a good read and as all of his books have been so far, worth the time. Getting some fantastic quotes from each of the books I've read so far and am keeping a journal of sorts of things that speak to me that I think could apply to today's world in America and beyond.

Oct 18, Melinda Brasher rated it liked it. I'm not a big western reader, so maybe this deserved higher rating. It certainly had interesting and exciting parts and a fair bit of violence, which isn't really my thing either. Stylistically, the overuse of "that" started to drive me crazy: "I pulled in that horse," "I had my hand on that shotgun. The ending was nice--both happy and sad, not too perfec I'm not a big western reader, so maybe this deserved higher rating. The ending was nice--both happy and sad, not too perfect. There's not a lot of unexpected in this story of the balance of law in a lawless land between a pillar of a man and the dregs of a man represented in part by two step brothers.

When the story heats up over a brutal four-nonstop-day cattle drive across the Chihuahuan Desert in Texas, a thieving band devastates the Killoe outfit and desperation takes hold, it is an all consuming read. I think it is fair to say that L'Amour's brand of law through respect, honor and honesty will never grow old. Jul 27, Ed rated it really liked it Shelves: action , western , adventure. He also shows his older step-brother that he is a full grown man.

Western - Guiding settlers across unknown territory, Dan Killoe takes on the added responsibility of helping a stranger who is being hunted by renegade Comancheros. Sometimes one never knows who the REAL enemy is! A quick read, but well-developed plot! L'Amour is a great story teller. Interesting book about the old west just after the Louisiana purchase.

Shows how ruthless men were and how common place death was. It is not only a glimpse into history, but an interesting story to boot.

Aug 31, Ronald rated it really liked it. Rarely am I disappointed by a Louis L'amour novel and easily give this one five stars.

I recommend it to new readers of Louis L'amour. I've read it a few times before and always enjoy it. Jun 25, Fredrick Danysh rated it it was amazing. Killoe heads across harsh wilderness with his friend Tap Henry, a gunman. Then Tap disappears with the woman Killoe loves leading to a deadly drama. May 04, Tyler Hohenberger rated it it was amazing.

I thought that this book was really good and had a lot of suspense in it because of the commancheros chasing down the group and how they get out of every situation even after losing all his cattle. Dec 18, Tod King added it. This like all Louis L'Amour books is a reread. It was wonderful once again. Longford - Longford Beauty Salons. Longford - Longford Electricians.
